George Ong, Head of Corporate Governance and Chief Risk Officer of Northern Ireland Water

I am responsible for the risk and resilience management, business continuity management, insurance risks and ‘Research, Development and Innovation’ (RDI) on risk management. I work across the business on cyber, ESG, health and wellbeing, supply-chain, operational and other emerging risks. Extreme weather is increasing in frequency and severity posing a significant impact on our business. I have implemented parametric insurance programmes for ‘Freeze’ and ‘Drought’ covers which are extremely effective in response to severe weather events with immediate pay-out to help meet our emergency response. I am currently working on a parametric solution for flood risk triggers and considering a wider application of parametric solutions such as cyber triggers. I am a Guest Lecturer at the Queens Management School and Ulster University Business School for their Masters programme in ‘Governance, Risk and Resilience Management’. I previously won the FERMA ‘Risk Initiative of the Year’ award, the British Insurance Excellence Award for ‘Risk Management’ and the AIRMIC ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award.
